Hazel Park Schools Locked Down Due to Gunman Nearby, Suspect in Custody
(Crystal A. Proxmire, Jan. 15, 2018)
Hazel Park, MI – Hazel Park School Superintendent Amy Kruppe announced that “Today in Hazel Park there was a police incident that took place near the Hazel Park Ice Arena. We were very fortunate to be notified by the Hazel Park Police department and were able to do a soft lock down of Hazel Park High School and Hoover Elementary School as recommended. This was done in order to make sure that we did not have any students walk in this direction after school.
“Our students and teachers were outstanding, while our wonderful Hazel Park Police handled the situation at the ice arena.
“Thank you for your patience and understanding while we were able to keep your students safe inside of the schools. We know that some of you had to wait and were delayed today. Please know that the safety of all children is our first priority each and every day.”
The incident happened around noon. City Manager Ed Klobucher confirmed that a suspect had been arrested.
