Artist Sabrina Nelson’s “The She Self” Closing Reception Nov 30 at Ferndale Library

FERNDALE, MI — The breathtaking visual art of Sabrina Nelson is on display at the Ferndale Area District Library this autumn, culminating with a closing reception on Thurs,. Nov 30th at 6pm. A passionate painter casting vibrant scenes that blend pale earthtones with sublime primary hues, Nelson’s framed subjects have a quiet yet commanding presence that all but comes right off the canvas. Her art can be profoundly expressive even when it is restrained.

The works on display at the Ferndale Library comprise the show she’s titled “The She Self.” Her selected works showcase the variety of her talents, with painting, sketching, adorned objects, and demonstrate her sensibilities both for utilizing negative space, as well as colorfully enlivening the whole canvas.

Heavily influenced by the determined, empowering and defiant style of icons like Frida Kahlo, the poignant, lifelike sculptures of Augusta Savage, and the late Gilda Snowden, an influential artist and educator in Detroit’s creative community. Nelson has a BFA from the College for Creative Studies from and teaches in the Education Studio at the Detroit Institute of Arts.
Nelson was born in the late 60’s, during the riots in Detroit.  Influenced by Yoruba Religion as well as Eastern and African Philosophy her work is a combination of spirit, motion and intimacy. Certainly not limited by 2 dimensions the scope of her work also includes sculpture, objects and installations.

Sabrina has been a professional artist for over 29 years and an educator for nearly as long. As a studio art teacher at the Detroit Institute of Arts, she lectures and preformed artist demonstrations. She is also on the staff for the College for Creative Studies where she works hard at motivating and preparing students to pursue an art degree in Detroit.
