Kids Can Learn How To Make Their Own Salsa at Ferndale Library Aug. 23

FERNDALE, Mich. (Aug. 10, 2017)– Before kids get back to their books, they can try being their own cooks! On Wed, Aug. 23, at the Ferndale Library, Emma Laut, of AmeriCorps and FoodCorps Michigan will host a free cooking class for kids focusing on creating a fun mild salsa from locally sourced produce.

With “Kids Cooking,” Laut will lead attendees ages 7 and up through a hands-on process that teaches them about growing their own produce, preparing and chopping each ingredient and mixing it all together to create their own dish. This can help expand the palette of local kids by not only exposing them to new flavors, but most importantly encouraging them to try more new fresh and healthy foods that they’ve never had before.

Laut teaches nutrition classes at Ferndale’s Lower Elementary School (grades K-2). She said that statistics have shown that 1 in 3 kids are going hungry, with an increasing threat of obesity causing more diet-related diseases.  She said that schools, principals, teachers and PTA groups have shown increased enthusiasm for improving the health of every child over the last 10 years, not just socially, emotionally, or academically, but particularly regarding nutrition. FoodCorps is a national initiative, part of the AmeriCorps service network, that got started in 2009. Laut’s program at the Ferndale Library furthers these services to show kids the bigger picture of what’s on their plate.

Laut is a graduate of Marian College, an Indianapolis native who recently moved to Detroit. She started with FoodCorps last year and now serves as the Nutrition and School Garden Leader at Lower Elementary. She said FoodCorps efforts, such as this program at the Ferndale Library, are meant to empower kids, giving them the encouragement to create their own recipe and highlight the benefits of choosing locally sourced produce.

It’s back-to-school time, and an excellent opportunity to assure that kids get a healthy start to the year.  Registration is required; contact the library at 248-546-2504
