Bike Month Activities in Ferndale Through May

Ferndale, MI – May is finally here and the City of Ferndale will be celebrating National Bike Month with weekly rides, classes, and more events. Ferndale City Council passed a resolution on April 10, 2017 to declare May as Bike Month to align with national efforts across the country and celebrate our nonmotorized-friendly city. Bike rides will be held each week in partnership with the Downtown Ferndale Bike Shop and classes, including Bike Law and Smart Cycling will be held at the Ferndale Area District Library. The annual family-friendly Downtown Bike Rodeo will also take place on May 18th at Schiffer Park with free bike inspections, helmets, and more. Dates for classes, rides, and events are listed below. -May 1st: Bike Ride (Downtown Ferndale Bike Shop at 6:30pm)
-May 3rd: Bike Law class (Ferndale Area District Library at 6pm)
-May 9th: Smart Cycling class (Ferndale Area District Library at 6pm)
-May 13th: Bike Ride (Downtown Ferndale Bike Shop at 1:00pm)
-May 18th: Downtown Bike Rodeo (Schiffer Park at 4pm)
-May 19th: Bike to Work Day (Meet at corner of Woodward Ave/W. Troy. More details here)
-May 21st: Bike Ride (Downtown Ferndale Bike Shop at 1pm)
-May 23rd: Bicyclist Town Hall (Ferndale Area District Library at 6pm)
-May 24th: Bike Ride (Downtown Ferndale Bike Shop at 6:30pm)
-May 29th: Memorial Day Parade (TBD)
-May 31st: Bike Ride (Downtown Ferndale Bike Shop at 6:30pm)

Following are some tips that will help you enjoy biking more.

Have your bike checked over by your local bike shop

Always wear a helmet to protect your head in the event of a crash

Ride in the right-most lane that goes in the direction that you are traveling

Obey all stop signs, traffic lights and lane markings

Look before you change lanes or signal a turn; indicate your intention, then act

Be visible and predictable at all times; wear bright clothing and signal turns
