Fire Safety Day Introduces North Oakland Kids to Firefighters & Cops

(Crystal A. Proxmire, Feb. 22, 2017)

Holly, MI – Donning plastic Fire Chief helmets, dozens of children from Holly and Rose Townships explored the North Oakland County Fire Authority station on Rose Center Road for Fire Safety Day.

They got to see a fire truck, police car, ambulance and all-terrain rescue vehicle up close, as well as practice with a mock fire extinguisher.

Volunteers from the Holly Area Coalition explained the dangers of smoking, not just for avoiding fire but also avoiding disease.  There were many activities, including putt putt golf, coloring and making first aid kids. A short video explained some common potential fire hazards, as well as how to escape a smoky room.  Firefighters and police officers were on hand to meet the kids and their parents.

The NOCFA serves nearly 70 miles of the County’s NW corner, an area with 17,785 residents.  In 2015 they responded to 810 calls.  The 49 on-call members, Chief and Training Officer are trained to handle a variety of emergencies, as the area has some specific challenges.

According to their website “Beyond the residential population, services are delivered to nonprofit day/overnight camps, several state parks and recreation areas, 3 schools and the Great Lakes National Cemetery. Significant exposures within our township include 15 miles of CSX Railroad and 10 miles of Canadian National Railroad that run the complete length of our area, a central distribution natural gas routing hub and a large diameter high pressure natural gas transmission pipeline. Our service area also covers over 5 miles of Interstate 75 and a full service truck stop.”
