Memoir Workshop at Pleasant Ridge Community Center Feb. 15

Pleasant Ridge, MI – The Pleasant Ridge Woman’s Club will host a public workshop entitled “Leave a Legacy: Save Your Life Stories” Wednesday, Feb. 15 at 7 p.m. at the Pleasant Ridge Community Center.

At the free workshop presenters Susan Carroll and Gigi Bott VanderWeele – owners of Your Personal Memoir, LLC of Pleasant Ridge – will explain the value of recording family stories, how to convince elders to share, and writing and interviewing techniques. Participants will practice storytelling and come away inspired to record family stories to be enjoyed for generations to come.

VanderWeele, a former Detroit Free Press reporter, and Carroll, a former human resources professional, help individuals or families preserve life stories with beautiful, heirloom-quality hardcover books. Their process involves recording, transcribing and editing family stories and then designing and publishing books.

“Future generations can’t appreciate these family histories unless the stories are documented while elders are still alive,” says Carroll. “These recorded stories end up being extremely powerful family heirlooms.”

“It never fails, when we finish a project there are always family members who are shocked by their parents’ or grandparents’ stories,” VanderWeele says. “You may think you’ve heard it all, but until you ask you may be surprised.”

The memoir workshop is intended to inspire people to record their own stories, or those of loved ones.

“People leave inheritance, property and valuables to family members, but with their stories they leave their wisdom,” Carroll says. “And everyone thinks they have so much time to sit down with mom or dad, until they don’t.”

The Pleasant Ridge Community Center is located at 4 Ridge Road, Pleasant Ridge, Mi. 48069.
