West Bloomfield, MI – “United We Walk” celebrates the life and contributions of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. The walk and refreshments, program, and candlelight vigil will all be held on Sunday, January 15, at West Bloomfield High School.
Congresswoman Brenda Lawrence
Congresswoman Lawrence will deliver the keynote speech at the celebration based on the 2017 theme, “His Dream Raises Us Up”.
Lawrence was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in November of 2014, where she serves as a Senior Whip and is a ranking member of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, also serving on the Interior Subcommittee.
United We Walk Co-Chair Jennifer Graham commented, “We are very honored to have Congresswoman Lawrence as our keynote speaker this year and share her views on social justice with our community.”
United We Walk will honor Michigan filmmaker and West Bloomfield resident Mike Rott (Dynasty Media Network, LLC) with its Community Leader Award. Among other films, Rott produced the award-winning documentary , ‘The Luft Gangster: Memoirs of A Second Class Hero’, which tells the story about the life and legacy of Tuskegee Airmen (“Red Tail”) fighter pilot, WWII Nazi P.O.W. and eyewitness to the atrocities at Dachau Concentration Camp, Lt. Col. Alexander Jefferson (95). Both Rott and Lt. Col. Jefferson will be in attendance to accept the award.
This year, for the first time, United We Walk will honor a community member with the prestigious Presidents Volunteer Service Award, to be announced at the program.
The program includes performances by the West Bloomfield High School Choir, Orchestra and Jazz Bands, Commemorative Button Design and Expression Contest winners, and recognition of the World Leader.
