FERNDALE, MI– Whether you’re a longtime gardener or just getting started, the Ferndale Library has an interesting program on Apr 27 that looks at the bigger picture of our backyards. Local plants can be crucial to bringing a balance to suburban ecosystems. Native insects need native plants. Why should we care about the insects? Well, native birds need those very native insects, so it all comes back to what we plant in our garden beds.

Brendan Nolan of Plants for Ecology (http://www.plantsforecology.com/) will give audience members a basic understanding of native plants, an overall explanation of ecology and the importance of habit creation. Nolan will also offer resources for local gardeners to do some further research of their Red Door Realty Ad _own_your_dreamown, back home.

Some readers may recognize Nolan from his regular appearances selling native plants at the Royal Oak Farmers Market. Through Plants For Ecology, this local Master Gardener and landscaper provides native plants are a combination of rescued and self-germinated species. He also provides native plants for local growers. No pesticides, nor herbicides, are used by Plants For Ecology, a method on which Nolan can offer tips to curious local gardeners at this month’s presentation.
