(EVENT page)

Ferndale, MI – An eclectic group of middle schoolers arrive at the 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, each eager to win for very different reasons. Sweet and shy Olive brings only her best friend (the dictionary) with her to the bee; Bold speller William Barfee uses his “magic foot” to propel him to greatness; former champion Chip is struggling with puberty;  Leaf is unconvinced that he’s smart enough to be a challenger; overachiever Marcy is disappointed by her consistent success; and politically aware Logainne only wants to impress her gay dads.

With every hilarious, touching, and catchy song, the spellers reveals his/her hopes, struggles, and passions as they make their way through the competition. The 25th Annual mendoza adPutnam County Spelling Bee causes audiences to fall in love, both with the show itself and its “perspicacious,” “jocular,” and “effervescent” spellers.”

Our production is sponsored by the Ferndale Musical Boosters Organization, and we have 20 Ferndale High School and Ferndale Middle School students in the cast, with another 25 students in the orchestra pit, and various crews.  The show is being directed by former FHS theatre teacher Linda Murley, assisted by Jamee Perryman.

Performances (one weekend only) are Friday, March 18, 7:30 p.m.; Saturday, March 19, 7:30 p.m.; and Sunday, March 20, 3:00 p.m.  Tickets are $10 for adults and $5.00 for students and senior citizens, available at the box office.

The script calls for 4 spellers to be called from the audience and we’ve invited a few community members to be part of the Bee.  On Friday night, Pleasant Ridge mayor Kurtgarden16_bridget_kevin_deegan_krause Metzger and Renaissance Vineyard Church minister Jim Pool will be among our guest Spellers.

On Saturday, we’ll welcome Ferndale Chief of Police Tim Collins and Ferndale High School Principal Roger Smith.

Sunday’s matinee guest spellers will include Oak Park Mayor Marian McClellan and Ferndale Public Library Director Jessica Keyser.

In addition to our community guest spellers, a raffle will be held before each performance to choose 2 more spellers.

j and d adThis is a really fun and entertaining show with lots of very funny moments and some truly poignant moments. There’s a lot of singing and dancing and the spelling words do stretch our vocabulary.  We believe the Ferndale area community will very much enjoy their trip to Putnam County!
