In spite of some off and on rain, Ferndale Pride launched the community into festival season with a celebration of love, welcoming, diversity and equality.  Volunteers and elected officials gathered for the opening ceremony, where special balloons made to quickly biodegrade were launched into the sky.  This year the rainbow colored ones were joined with several black ones, in honor of Kevin Rogers who passed away this year.  Rogers was a longtime LGBT rights candlewickshoppeADblueactivist, champion for the growth of Ferndale, and co-owner of the rainbow-themed gift shop Just 4 Us.

With an ever-growing event size, Ferndale Pride stretched along W. 9 Mile and onto Allen, with booths of LGBT friendly resources and vendors.  The main stage and the dance stage rocked as best as they could in between the times of rain.  The evening drew to a close with main stage bands moving into Twisted Tavern and local restaurants and bars packed with people celebrating.

Proceeds from the event go to Affirmations Community Center, Ferndale Community Foundation, Michigan AIDS Coalition, and Transgender Michigan.
