In spite of the rain, over 70 people showed up for a city-wide day of volunteering called Clean the Ferndale Up. Each year the event gets more sophisticated.  This year the addition of Candlewickshop_May2014recycling drop off and a composting demo made the event even more helpful for the planet. And with the help of the Ferndale DPW, volunteers not only picked up trash, but helped spread much and planted flowers to make the city even more fabulous.

Councilperson Greg Pawlica, who also sits on the Blue Ribbon Parks Commission, welcomed the volunteers in the City Hall parking lot bright and early Saturday morning.

“Our parks and our community are important to us. We want to show that we invest in this ferndale_pride_2015_02community by taking a couple of hours and cleaning it up,” Pawlica said.

He also recognized the behind the scenes efforts of the event, including much praise for Special Events Manager Michael Lary who organized meetings, make priority task lists, set agenda and “making sure we got everything done to get us here today.”

Pinwheel Bakery donated muffins for the volunteers. Tony Phoenix of Candlewick Shop administered the website. SOCRRA and Car Trucking helped by providing on-site recycling drop off of electronics, batteries, paint and other items. Contractor’s Clothing donated Clean the Ferndale Up hats. The Woodward Avenue Brewers donated 20% off coupons. And event Judy_Palmer30yearssponsors included The Fabulous Ferndale Forum and Mayor ProTem Dan Martin. The Dales Neighborhood group, which includes Councilperson Melanie Piana, also showed up in force with a team of volunteers.

The volunteers divided into groups and headed to different parts of the city, mainly focusing on parks and public spaces.
