A Park is Growing in Downtown Pontiac, Crowdfunding Could Capture Matching Grant
(Crystal A. Proxmire, Feb. 6, 2015)
In the empty space between two office building on North Saginaw Street (across from Thrifty Pharmacy) sits a vacant lot of dirt and debris that could one day blossom into a community green space. The Downtown Pontiac Business Association has beautiful plans for the site, and are doing a crowdfunding campaign to raise $12,500 that will be matched by the Michigan Economic Development Corporation if they are successful.
The project is called Saginaw Green, and it includes trees, landscaping, a path, a gazebo and benches. There people can gather, have community events, and enjoy a green atmosphere in an urban setting. An electrical center will give the power to host concerts and other events.
The DPBA is raising money through Patronicity at https://patronicity.com/project/saginaw_green.
And there is a kickoff party on Feb. 19 with wine and cheese, and a chance to hear about Saginaw Green and the Canvas Pontiac 2015 public art project. The party is from 6pm to 8pm at 103 N Saginaw St, Pontiac, MI 48342. There is no charge to attend, but donations are encouraged.
The DPBA’s Saginaw Green page explains the benefits of a pocket park, stating “Green spaces do more than soften the concrete urban landscape, but also provide places to congregate, commune, and grow. Downtown Pontiac’s first urban green space built in many years promises to support the communities growing resident and business population.”
“Every gift gets us closer to our goal! Please share the great news with your friends, family, and co-workers too of the progress happening in your community.”
