(Oakland County Sheriff’s Department, Jan. 29, 2015)
INCIDENT: 13:13 Hrs. – Jan. 28 – City of Pontiac – Suspicious Circumstances / Possible Attempted Child Abduction #15-13877
SUMMARY: Deputies at the Pontiac Substation took a walk-in report for a Suspicious Circumstance / Possible Attempted Child Abduction. The mother of an 11 year old female and a 7 year old male stated that her children were walking home from school in the area of Rundel and Nelson when they heard a vehicle behind them. The passenger got out of the vehicle wearing a mask and the children could hear someone say, “Hurry up and Grab them”. The sister (11 year old female) grabbed her brother’s backpack and told him to “run”. They ran to the Community Experience Building (Howard Dell Center) where a witness who was outside and had seen them running from the area of the van, took the children inside to make sure they were safe.
The children subsequently described the passenger who approached them as a black male (they could see his hands). They also stated that the driver was wearing a mask, but that he was also a black male. They further described the vehicle as a small, light or powder blue, minivan with the passenger sliding door window either broken or having tape on it. The witness from the Community Experience Building who took the children in gave the same description of the vehicle, but stated that she could not identify the occupants of the van.
OUTCOME OF INCIDENT: Detectives responded to interview the children. Detectives also checked several businesses in the area that have surveillance cameras, but could not locate the vehicle on any video. Area checks were conducted of the surrounding area and a county wide BOL for the vehicle was broadcast. Deputies, Detectives and the Sheriff’s Directed Patrol Unit (DPU) searched the city for the van throughout the shift. The midnight shift was also advised and continued looking for the vehicle. The School District for the City of Pontiac was advised of the incident. The investigation continues.
