Moonshine and Good Times: End of Prohibition Event Raised Money for Goodfellows
(C. Proxmire, Dec. 12, 2014)
Another year of 1920s costumes and passing the moonshine jug has helped the Ferndale Goodfellows with their mission of providing a Christmas to needy family. The End of Prohibition Party is the creation of Larry and Monica Mills, who love to bring the spirit of Ferndale’s clubs and pubs together for the benefit of the community.
This year volunteers Julie Anderson, Jarod Bardon, Craig Covey, Jeannie Davis, John DeNardo, Darla DiClemente, Ann Hubbarth, Sandy Koelzer, Dan Martin, and Greg Pawlica joined the Mills on their quest, with each one honoring the 1920s with costumes of gangsters, newsboys and flappers. A life-size Al Capone added even more fun – and photo opportunities – to the evening. The theme is simple. Booze was legalized 81 years ago – so why not drink it up? Templeton Rye and Tito’s Handmade Vodka were the drinks of choice for Al Capone and his gang this year.
Among the participating local business were Danny’s Irish Pub, Dino’s, Howe’s Bayou, New Way Bar, Sneakers Pub, Soho, Tony’s Sports Bar, The Twisted Tavern.
The official total count is not yet in, but Monica Mills says she expects the fundraiser to have raised about $3,500.
Dino’s Lounge is collecting toys and selling holiday ornaments through the end of the year to further help the cause. People can also continue to donate at Just 4 Us or mail checks there payable to Ferndale Goodfellows, 211 W. Nine Mile Rd.
