Clawson Schools Buildings Damaged by Flood
(Clawson Public Schools Press Release, Aug. 22, 2014)
The Clawson School District has insurance that will cover most of the damage which occurred in the August 11, 2014 flood. According to Superintendent Monique Beels, “We are working closely with our insurance company to assess the damage and replace classroom and office furnishings as quickly as possible.”
“Opening Baker Child Care is our top priority. We sincerely apologize for the hardship this has caused our families. I want to commend our staff – teachers, custodians, administrators, office staff – everyone has pulled together to help each other and ensure that we will be ready for the opening of school Tuesday, September 2.”
Here is the building by building flood report:
KENWOOD ELEMENTARY
Water was extracted from the entrance. Carpeting has been dried and cleaned.
SCHALM ELEMENTARY
Water was extracted from the entrance. Carpeting has been dried and cleaned.
CLAWSON HIGH SCHOOL
Athletic uniforms stored in the basement of the building are being replaced.
CLAWSON MIDDLE SCHOOL
The gymnasium floor was destroyed.
In the hallway leading to the gymnasium, carpeting in three classrooms is being replaced with tile. A few classrooms may have to be relocated until the flooring installation is complete.
Office carpeting and furniture is being replaced.
BAKER ADMINISTRATION BUILDING
The Preschool/Child Care Center sustained the heaviest damage and unfortunately, has been closed since the flood.
A professional restoration company has been working around the clock extracting water, surveying the damage, sanitizing, installing fans and dehumidifiers to dry out the building.
All classroom carpeting has been removed. We will be replacing all the classroom tile and carpeting beginning this weekend and are currently itemizing damaged furniture so that replacements can be ordered. Remaining furnishings are being sanitized.
We expect all of our schools will be ready for Opening Day Tuesday, September 2. We are hoping to have our Child Care Center open next week.
