(compiled, April 28, 2014)

On May 20th, John Gallagher, Free Press columnist and author, will come to Pleasant Ridge to discuss his book, Reimagining Detroit. This is the Pleasant Ridge book club selection for the month and Jason Kryziak, City Commissioner and book club founder, was able to convince the author to attend. Kryziak met Gallagher while attending a showing of the movie, “Lean, Mean and Green,” at the Detroit Documentary festival. The essentialmovie was based on John’s book, and PR Mayor Kurt Metzger, who has worked with John on many of his columns over the last 20 years, participated in the movie.

The discussion takes place at 7:00 on May 20 at the Pleasant Ridge Community Center 4 Ridge Road, Pleasant Ridge, MI 48069. It is hoped that anyone who is interested in Detroit, or in meeting John, will join our PR contingent that evening. We all have a stake in the future of Detroit and the future of this region. Opportunities to meet across ‘artificial’ boundaries and discuss common issues will lead to solutions.

Published by Wayne State University Press, Reimagining Detroit looks at data-driven solutions for development. Here’s what their website has to say:

“Experts estimate that perhaps forty square miles of Detroit are vacant-from a quarter to a third of the city -a level of emptiness that creates a landscape unlike any other big city. Author John Gallagher, who has covered urban redevelopment for the Detroit Free Press for two decades, spent a year researching what is going on in Detroit precisely because of its open space and the dire economic times we face. Instead of presenting another account of the city’s decline, Reimagining Detroit: Opportunities for Redefining an American City
