Ferndale Resident Dead after Being Restrained by Mall Security
(Crystal A. Proxmire, Jan. 30, 2014)
24-year-old Mackenzie Gordon Cochrane is dead after being pepper sprayed and held down by three Northland Mall Security Guards on Tuesday. Southfield Police told Fox 2 News that the man “appeared ready to assault someone. He was breathing heavy and had clinched fists… Security officers feared for their safety and pepper sprayed and restrained the man.”
According to the report, Gordon was asked to leave Northland Mall on Monday after he appeared to be standing suspiciously. When he returned Tuesday, he took his final breaths on the floor of the mall while being held down by the three security guards. A cell phone video (which can be viewed on Fox 2) shows him saying “I can’t breathe” multiple times. One security guard responds “If you can talk, you can breathe.”
A witness told Fox 2 that he wanted to intervene and give the man CPR, but security refused and told him that he was “being troublesome.”
Southfield Police told Fox 2 that an autopsy was underway to determine the cause of death.
