Downtown Ferndale will do it in the dark on Saturday, November 23 when the Ferndale Downtown Development Authority launches the 2013 holiday season with its first ever Holiday Hoof Nightime Obstacle Run, Fun Walk & FestivALE, an all-day holiday party featuring Americana music, cold weather comfort food and Christmas craft beer.   The event takes place from noon to midnight and offers 12 hours of action for music lovers and beer aficionados, serious athletes, weekend warriors and casual walkers.  Highlight of the evening will be the Woodward Avenue Tree Lighting and Holiday Hoof Awards Ceremony.  The entire promotion is abridget and kevin deegan krause thank you fundraiser for public art in Downtown Ferndale.

“We have something for everyone. Whether you are new to running or a serious runner, a beer connoisseur, music lover or a fan of holiday hoopla, we’ve got it all, all in one day, in Downtown Ferndale,” said Cristina Sheppard-Decius, Executive Director of the Ferndale DDA.  “Our goal was to create a memorable experience and showcase the district by kicking off the holidays in true Ferndale fashion.”

Holiday Hoof (HH) participants, properly equipped with timing chips, day-glo lights and jingle bell wristlets, will “run their jingle off” when they take off in the dark to take on a course dotted with 13 holiday themed obstacle challenges.  The Santa Bag Haul, Deck the Balls, Rudolph’s Roof Climb, an ice slide, elf tunnel and a burning yule log jump will all test the mettle of runners. Participants are encouraged to up the festive factor by wearing holiday gear and lighting themselves up,  with prizes for those who are the best at each, as well as fastest male and female, best team and most team spirit.  Staging and the start/finish of Holiday Hoof takes place on W. Troy Street, between Allen and dda holiday hoof 2013 adWoodward.  Entrants can choose between the 4+ mile obstacle run or the 2 mile fun walk.

~4+mile Obstacle Run includes TWO FREE passes into FestivALE, a commemorative cup, day-glo necklace and jingle bell wristlet

-$60 after Nov. 15 and on Race Day

~2 mile Fun Walk (family friendly and strollers allowed) includes ONE FREE pass into FestivALE, essentialcommemorative cup, day-glo necklace and jingle bell wristlet

-$20 Ages 11 and up

-$10 for 10 and under

FestivALE, hosted by One Eyed Betty’s, takes place on West Troy Street AND is the start/finish location of Holiday Hoof.  An enticing array of Christmas craft beers on tap from Bell’s Brewery, Dark Horse Brewing Company, Short’s Brewing Company & Arbor Brewing Company; limited specialty taps of rare brews; seven bands and/or musical performers; cold weather comfort foods including roasted beasts of pig, lamb and goat, a giant tartiflette and long apple strudel; bonfires, heated tent and circus performers. Inside One-Eyed Betty’s will be a Short’s Brewing Company tap takeover of all of their pub brews not bottled, 30 pinball machines.  For those looking to not run or walk, and are only interested in the FestivALE portion, tickets are $20 in advance, $25 at the door.

Finally, the tradition of the Woodward Avenue Tree Lighting will be showcased in the day’s activities when Street-Eatzz-Admore than 7,000 bulbs are switched on to light up Downtown Ferndale’s marquee evergreen on the south side of the median at Woodward and Nine Mile Road.   This holiday launch favorite happens at 7:30 pm.
