Artist’s Exhibition… Jan. 12

Artist’s Exhibition Meditates On Sound & Vision, Rhythm And Patterns Jan 12f115adFUNDING

(Ferndale Public Library Press Release, Jan. 8, 2013)

Ferndale Public Library’s Arts and Exhibitions Committee is pleased to present Who Are We To Argue With Chance?, a solo exhibition of original paintings by Mike Ross. These works, embodying a two-year exploration of how repetition and juxtaposition of line and color affect an audience will be displayed in the Library’s Atrium and Community Room (January 12-February 23).  This exhibition was curated by the Ferndale Public Library Arts and Exhibitions Committee.

The Library hosts an Artists’ Reception on Saturday, January 12 from 7pm – 9pm with refreshments and live music by Cactuswax, (one of the artist’s various musical performing/recording projects).

“Patterns are everywhere if we choose to see them,” Ross observed. Chance’s works ruminate on patterns and repetition; their influence on the way the eye and, by extension, the mind sees and grasps the world.

Ross’ paintings further explore the provocation of chance, the inspiration of a pattern disrupted, of sudden unpredictability. Working in a variety of mediums, including oil and watercolor, his art features a stratum of bold, parallel lines atop colorful shapes that create a mesmerizing image.  Ross cites Robert Ryman, Jackson Reid_Sally_115Pollack and Andy Warhol among his inspirations. “If you triangulate their respective bodies of work you could probably see where I’m coming from (with a dash of R. Crumb for sad comic effect). My artistic influences seem to run less on direct visual similarity and more on feel, aesthetics and implication.”

As both musician and artist, Ross draws from the layered sounds and rhythms of bands like Acid Mothers Temple, Durutti Column, Lou Reed’s Metal Machine Music, among others. “That’s what gets my brain juices flowing and makes me want to put brush to surface,” he says, “in an attempt to sort of translate that sound to the realm of vision – then the hope is that the resulting visual work is auditory, or nearly so.”

Ross’ limited edition prints, t-shirts and other handmade merchandise will also be available for purchase at the reception. The Arts and Exhibitions Committee will not be involved in the sale of any artwork beyond providing interested buyers with the artist’s provided contact information.

“We are excited to present Ross’ original paintings here in the Ferndale Public Library,” says Jessica Keyser, Director. “Ross’ work is at turns funny and intriguing. I am sure his show will provoke much thoughtful discussion in the library and throughout the community.”

The Ferndale Public Library Art and Exhibitions Committee’s mission is to promote and foster an appreciation of two and three-dimensional art for library patrons, through exhibits, lectures, and an expanded collection of art books.
