16th Annual Ferndale Pub Crawl – Friday July 27, 2012

(Pub Crawl Press Release, Ferndale 115 News, July 20, 2012)

This is the original, big one!  One of the most popular and anticipated events each summer in Ferndale, MI is the Annual Ferndale Pub Crawl.  It will again be held the last Friday of July, and this year the number of participants will again reach 2,000.  Registration begins at 6:30 pm at Boogie Fever on Woodward in downtown Ferndale.  Participants must be at least 21 years of age, and motorized vehicles are permitted.

This event began 16 years ago with 36 people walking to the half dozen bars in downtown Ferndale.  Created then by a group called FANS of Ferndale, the event grew every year with more people and more clubs and venues, as the renaissance of Ferndale took place.  This year the crowds will visit 22 establishments. All funds raised go to four local tax-deductible charities, including the Ferndale Police Auxiliary, FernCare, Ferndale Community Foundation, and the Michigan AIDS Coalition.

The event is a walking tour of the pubs, bars, and restaurants in downtown Ferndale. No motor vehicles are permitted. The crowds of residents and visitors are very diverse, made up of women and men, gay and straight, young and older, from many cities and regions of Michigan, other states and even countries, The participants range in age from 21 to the their late 70s. They are professionals, blue and green collar workers, millennials and retired folks.   They buy food and drinks, and they see the shops and stores that abound in vibrant downtown Ferndale.

This year the crawl will feature door prizes for the 2010 Tony Award, Best Musical Revival winner, La Cage Aux Folles starring George Hamilton and Christopher Sieber showing at the Fisher Theatre Sept 25 to October 7, 2012.  Pub Crawl participants can win tickets through trivia contests, enter to win tickets at certain pub crawl venues, and through an online Broadway in Detroit contest entered by scanning a unique QR code available only to paid crawlers.

Dave Coulter, Ferndale’s Mayor will send off the first groups, as have three other Ferndale mayors before him.  Crawlers travel in groups of 20 to 100, spending 20 minutes to a half hour at each venue.

Craig Covey, who founded the event in 1996 as President of FANS and has managed the event since, said   “The Pub Crawl is all about fun, but it has also raised huge amounts of funds for our local charities, and it showcases Ferndale’s many fine businesses.”

There are 22 venues participating including pubs, clubs, and restaurants.  Absolute Vodka is the top sponsor.  Web site for the event is www.FerndalePubCrawl.org or join its Face book event page- 16th Annual Ferndale Pub Crawl.

Tickets are $10 and can be purchased the night of the event at Boogie Fever from 6:30 until 9 pm or through volunteers in the downtown all night long.  For information to volunteer or other info contact Monica Mills at 248.545.1435 X 117 or email her at: mmills@michiganaidscoalition.org.
