Citizens for Quality Schools Meet Tonight to Discuss Bond Issue
(Crystal A. Proxmire, 12/18/2011)
A group of parents and voters in favor of the upcoming School Bond will be meeting at Drayton Avenue Presbyterian Church at 2441 Pinecrest to discuss strategy for getting voters to approve a $22,825,000 bond which will be on the February 28, 2012 ballot. The meeting will be held Sunday, December 18, 2011 at 6:30pm.
Last summer a Bond Committee looked at the projects Ferndale Schools hopes to accomplish with the bond money, including asbestos removal, heating vent issues, pool repairs, carpeting, and technology upgrades and the infrastructure to support them. In July a group took a tour of Ferndale High School and saw the deterioration first hand of the building, which was constructed in 1958. Bradford Parks was a member of the 20 person committee. “The bond was recommended by a subcommittee for the Ferndale Schools Operations Committee… I think anyone who looks into the issue will learn, as the subcommittee members did, that many of our school buildings in the district are in the need of repair, and that it will cost much less for us to do this now then to wait. It’s also important to note there is no tax increase related to this bond–it is a continuation of the existing school bond,” Parks said.
“I support the millage because it provides crucial infrastructure improvements to the Ferndale Public schools. It’s not for new buildings or new programs, but for things like asbestos abatement, fixing aging pipes, etc. We need to fix these things now before they cost our district much more in the future,” Parks added.
The meeting today is for those who want to promote the passing of the bond. Child care will be available. More information on Citizens for Quality Schools can be found on their Facebook Page at https://www.facebook.com/CitizensForQualitySchools.
