(Crystal A. Proxmire, Ferndale 115 News 01/15/2012)
During the month of January, the Lawrence Street Gallery(22620 Woodward) is featuring its “Best of the Best” from 2011 – works from those artists who took home prizes in the galleries juried competitions over the year. There were four annual juried shows (invitational, figurative, photography and small works), and the current exhibit features nine of those who placed:
~Kathleen Boettcher from Farmington Hills
~Colin Delaney from Ann Arbor
~Larry Zdeb from Troy
~Carolyn Mel from Royal Oak
~Christine Bruxvoort from Ypsilanti
~Krysti Spence from Madison Heights
~Robert Bielat from Ferndale
~Candace Law from Berkley
~Anthony Duce from Birmingham.
In a press release issued by the gallery, Laura Host, organizer of this exhibition said, “Just as music, theater and literature look back on the best of the previous year’s offerings in January, we at the Gallery have decided to give the public another chance to take a look at the new work of last year’s top picks.”
Among those in attendance for the Artist’s reception was Larry Zdeb, whose mixed media work includes wall art, “unstables” structures, and collage boxes often equipped with a light.
One unique feature of Zeb’s work is his use of salvaged engraver mats that were used to create the molds for newspapers in the 1940s.
Zeb won the summer invitational at Lawrence Street, and was invited back for this exhibit. His work is also featured in Art Space 2 in Downtown Birmingham. He was interviewed by Michigan Public Radio and his work and bio can be seen at http://www.artbreak.com/LarryZdeb.
