The Ferndale Goodfellows took in 75 applications for assistance this holiday season. Some were from seniors who just needed food, and others were from families with children. Ferndale Fire Sergeant Ken Kronner said that each applicant received a food certificate to Ferndale Foods located at Nine Mile and Livernois as well as a voucher to 1 of 3 restaurants in the city: Hambo’s, Sam’s Ferndale Grill or Hilton Cafe. The amount was determined by the size of the family. Each child received a $30 gift card to Target.
The Ferndale Elks and Ferndale United Methodist Church provided food baskets for many of the applicants. United Methodist also helped the Goodfellows with Christmas Trees to those that needed one.
Santa arrived by Fire Truck on Thursday, December 15th. to deliver gifts and a cake to the 50 men and women who reside at the Hilton Convalescent Home.
The food and gifts are made possible by donations from within the community. The Ferndale Goodfellows collects donations at the Fire Station, and there are other fundraisers in the community.
The annual End of Prohibition Party raised $3901.60 with a large multi-venue event celebrating the legalization of alcohol. Started by Larry and Monica Mills, the tradition takes place at several local bars, with volunteers dressed in 1920s and 30s garb collecting donations in moonshine jugs.
The Goodfellows paper sale is another annual tradition to raise money for the families. The annual fundraiser was discontinued a couple of years ago due to reduced staff. This year The Ferndale 115 News is helping the Goodfellows revive the tradition, with an online fund drive that will help both the locally-owned online community news site, and The Goodfellows to continue the services provided to Ferndale. From now through December 31, The Ferndale 115 News is collecting donations online for the group. 85% of the donations will go directly to the Goodfellows, and 15% will go to The Ferndale 115 News to help us continue our community coverage through the next year. So far we are over $450!
