Como’s Employee Recognized for Pursuit of Thief

Como’s Employee Recognized for Pursuit of Thief

(Crystal A. Proxmire, Ferndale 115 News, 9/26/2011)

When crime takes place in Ferndale, the police are often nearby and ready to serve and protect.  But sometimes it takes a citizen doing the right thing for justice to really prevail.

Como’s employee Miles Vanmeter was recognized Ferndale’s City Council meeting on Monday, September 26, 2011 for his efforts in stopping a thief.

Police Chief Tim Collins read from a recommendation letter from Lt. Gary Whiting, “On August 30, 2011, Mr. Vanmeter was working at Como’s restaurant when he saw a person near a bicycle in front of the restaurant.  He thought the person was acting suspiciously and then saw the man cut a locking mechanism that secured the bike to a lamp post.

“Mr. Vanmeter called 911 and gave an excellent description of the suspect and his direction.  As the suspect pedaled away, Mr. Vanmeter ran in his direction while continuing to give information to the desk. The information Mr. Vanmeter provided allowed the responding police officers to locate and arrest the thief.

Mr. Vanmeter’s selfless action resulted in the arrest of a criminal and the return of a $400 bicycle to a very grateful owner.  Mr. Vanmeter should be recognized by the City for his actions.”
