Sept 2011 Beautification Awards Announced

The Ferndale Beautification Commission carries on with its mission of encouraging residents to keep the city clean and full of interesting landscapes by awarding the September 2011 Beautification Awards.
Each month through summer the Commission gives out the awards with two going to a resident and one going to a business. This month’s recipients are Garry Andrews and Jeff Taylor of 446 W. Drayton, and Michael Pittiglio of 536 E. Maplehurst. The commercial property chosen is The Community Pride Building at 429 Livernois, which is managed by Kim Craig/Detroit Diamond.
“I was really surprised,” said Pittiglio about having gotten the award. “I mean, I put a lot of work into it, so it’s nice to be recognized. I wasn’t expecting it.” When Pittiglio moved in three years ago, there was “nothing but dirt and three overgrown shrubs.” The steps came forward from the porch and weren’t in very good shape. Now there is a wave of ornamental shrubbery edged with delicate pink roses on one end, and a brand new set of stone steps leading to the driveway at the other.
Over on W. Drayton, Andrews and his husband Taylor are so proud of their Beautification Award lawn sign that they covered it in plastic to keep it dry.
One long summer weekend when Taylor was stuck in a chair with a foot injury, Andrews kept busy in the front yard. He laid four and a half tons of colonial flagstone and nine yards of topsoil as the basis for his creation. And in the four years since, the perennials have filled in nicely. The trees have grown healthy and lush. And the men have taken care to add colorful annuals, which give a welcoming feel to the front of the house.
The commercial property Beautification Award recipient was recognized for improvements at 429 Livernois, which is the Community Pride Building. This office space is home to Michigan AIDS Coalition, Transgender Michigan, and other tenants. Kim Craig and friends have re-done a garden in the back.
Each winner has the sign placed on their property, and will be presented with a certificate at the Sept. 26, 2011 Ferndale City Council meeting. To view the Council meeting live or after the fact, go to The City of Ferndale’s website at www.ferndale-mi.com.
