SE Oakland Coalition’s New Chairperson Hosting Open House July 31

(Crystal A. Proxmire, 7/11/2011)

The SE Oakland Coalition will be hosting an open house on July 31 to introduce the community to their drug and alcohol prevention programs and their new Chairperson of the Board Mishelle Y. Kennedy.  The SEOC works to prevent substance abuse throughout the community, and in particular among youth. They do this through a variety of programs, including:

Annual Safe Night
“Parents Who Host Lose the Most” Campaign
Social Marketing to Change Community Norms
Youth Dream Cruise table
Volunteer Recognition Dinner
“Family Guide to Safe Parties”
Communities Mobilizing for Change on Alcohol (CMCA)

“Our goal is to create a safe and healthy environment in which to live and work with a focus on youth drug and alcohol prevention in Ferndale School District. We are working with the School District and a Drug Free Communities Federal Grant that helps community coalitions implement environmental strategies to help delay the onset of drug and alcohol use,” said Carly Averill, an organizer for SEOC. “So far I think our biggest accomplishment has been working with the school district and holding a district wide 6th grade day for youth to express their perspectives on school transitions and what peer pressures they are up against.”

The open house takes place on Sunday, July 31 · 2:00pm – 4:00pm at 21272 Mendota Ave Ferndale MI 48220.

The past Chair was Donnis Reese, who held a long-time position as well as being one of the founding members of the coalition. She has retired and moved north in the state, so Kennedy has stepped in.

Averill says the event will be casual, with chips, hamburgers and hot dogs and plenty of time to ask questions about the Coalition.  There are volunteer opportunities as well, including positions on the board.
