Elevation is a mind state, the will to take yourself to a higher level than your human body would normally allow. Let the music be the mothership, free your mind and the funky past will be swallowed.

On July 10, Common Breath Media and 5E Gallery will present ELAvated Sunday, featuring a special performance by Detroit’s hip hop champions, 5 ELA. The event will take place at AJ’s Music Cafe in Ferndale, MI (240 W 9 Mile Road) from 4pm-7pm.

The music for this event will be ELAvated, featuring a special set from DJ La Jedi, who will be bringing out a special vinyl record collection with no limits to the playlist. From classic garage rock to funk, from Motown hip hop to electro punk, ELAvated Sunday will break the monotony of normal DJ events and spin the records for the people.

Beyond the music, ELAvated Sunday is also about bringing together the people in a free and relaxed environment to talk about the issues that matter most. The dedicated men and women working towards social justice and peace are encouraged to attend, as this will be a networking opportunity to help organize and bring forth action.

AJ’s Music Cafe is a dynamic creative space which facilitates the expression of art and ideas. The cafe has hosted many of Metro Detroit’s most dedicated individuals to advance a variety of local causes, from Autism awareness to supporting laid-off auto workers. AJ’s is nationally recognized as the home of the Assembly Line Concert, a marathon music event that for the third straight year has broken the Guiness Record for longest consecutive concert, with proceeds going towards local charities.

5 ELA is a foundational group in Detroit hip hop history, having been part of developing the sound that created international superstars in the 1990s alongside former member Proof and former producer J Dilla. The group’s most recent projects are the 2010 releases of the “World Wide Riot” EP and the “5 ELA / Ladies Luv 5 ELA” double EP.

Common Breath Media is a multimedia web magazine dedicated to a progressive hip hop culture, having gained international attention this year for its support of the Cairo-based group Arabian Knightz and their inspirational songs released during revolution in Egypt. Founder Steve Furay is dedicated to uplifting Detroit and spreading the city’s story worldwide, with Common Breath Media as his outlet for artistic media creation and journalism for peace and unity.

5E Gallery is Detroit’s premier community art space for hip hop culture, established in 2008 by DJ Sicari of the group 5 ELA. The gallery is located in Detroit and is reaching out to different communities in support for its upcoming youth programming, including a multimedia development course that will help develop young entrepreneurs in the city.
