Ferndalers to Meet Up in Florida – March 13

(Crystal A. Proxmire, 2/26/2011)

An unofficial annual event has grown this year thanks to the Memories of Ferndale, Michigan Facebook Group.  Last year members of the group arranged to have a Meetup at the Ferndale Elks Club, bringing out dozens of Ferndale alumni spanning several generations.  (Read all about the great turnout and the stories of our City’s past at http://www.ferndale115.com/20100516memories.html.)  Now there is one in the works for March 13, 2011 to take place at the Bradenton, Florida Coquina Beach Gulfside North Pavilion from 10am to 7pm.

Kirk Morey has taken the lead on organizing the meet up.  He grew up in Ferndale and moved to Florida in 1978 when his parents moved there to retire.  “At that time Michigan was going through what it is going through right now,” Morey said.  “Grew up on the west side of Ferndale lived at 1695 W. Saratoga went to Jefferson then to Lincoln and  am proud to say a member of FHS class of 1974.”

“Go Eagles,” he added with pride.

Morey is expected to be joined by around twenty other alumni, who he says “span several decades.”  Many are “snowbirds” who enjoy Michigan three seasons out of the year, but head south for the cold winter months.

“Do I miss winter? Only for about a week,” Morey said.  “I have not shoveled snow for 30-plus years. …But I would like to go skiing sometime.”

He said that Bradenton is the perfect spot for a Ferndaler Florida Meet up because I-75 is so close.

Facebook has helped him create the event.  “I believe what worked for the Elks Club Event is they had many facets. The engine was the internet. The vehicle was Facebook, and the fuel was the pride of us good ole Ferndalers – and where we grew up and who we grew up with.  And I have to give Kudos to the The Elks club they really stepped up to the plate and made us all welcome,” he said.  For the Florida meet up he also credits co-worker Perry Sloan, who has donated the pavilion.
