Best-Selling Irish Author John Connolly to Speak at Ferndale Reads
(1/24/2011)
The Ferndale Public Library will welcome its first international best-selling author as a keynote speaker the evening of March 29, 2011, when Irish author, John Connolly, will come to discuss his book, The Book of Lost Things.
The event will be the jewel in the crown of the library’s second-annual month of community-wide reading events: Ferndale Reads. The event will be free and open to the public, though those interested are encouraged to pick up tickets by inquiring at the Library, located at 222 E. 9 Mile.
Darlene Hellenberg, who coordinated last year’s Big Read and this year’s Ferndale Reads, could not be more pleased that Mr. Connolly is coming to Ferndale. “When the book was chosen, I wouldn’t have dreamt that he’d be able to come out. I took a chance and sent him a message, and it turns out he was going to be in the US during March. We’re so lucky to have him,” Hellenberg said.
The event will be at the end of a month chock-full of happenings in Ferndale related to the book and its fairy-tale themes. A film series, performances at Go! Comedy, several book discussions and a storyteller event are also planned for the month.
John Connolly was born in Dublin, Ireland in 1968 and has, at various points in his life, worked as a journalist, a barman, a local government official, a waiter and a dogsbody at Harrods department store in London. He studied English in Trinity College in Dublin and journalism at Dublin City University. He subsequently spent five years working as a freelance journalist for The Irish Times newspaper, to which he continues to contribute.
Connolly’s seventh novel, The Book of Lost Things, a story about fairy stories and the power that books have to shape our world and our imaginations, was published in September 2006. The Whisperers, the ninth in his Charlie Parker series, was released in 2010.
