Woodward Avenue Brewers (WAB) will be hosting a Winter Beer Tasting on Sat. Jan. 8, 2011 from 7-10pm at Loving Touch(22634 Woodward).  Part of the proceeds from the event go to support the Southeast Michigan Group of the Sierra Club.

WAB and Loving Touch are owned by the Johnston family, who also own The Emory.  And Emily Husband helps manage the three, though she can most often be found at The Emory. (All in a row at the corner of Woodward and Saratoga for those not familiar with Downtown Ferndale).  She and a team of experts organized the Winter Beer Tasting as a show of support for promoting green ideas.

“The WAB, The Loving Touch, and The Emory strive to be green businesses, and also are very community oriented,” Husband said.  “We are approached consistently for support in fundraising either in donations or for use of space and always do what we can to help local non-profits.  Our master brewer is heavily involved with the Sierra club and puts on many beer/Sierra Club events.  When Julie Ann Wang approached us as a venue for a SEMG fundraiser, we figured our annual winter beer tasting was the perfect event to pair it with.”
The Johnstons provided the beer and the venue, plus a portion of ticket sales.  Other local donations to SEMG for the event include use of a fishing simulator from Metro Steelhead Association, and a bike racing simulator from Downtown Ferndale Bike Shop.  There will also be a silent auction of items from the Sierra Club and local businesses.

Tickets are $30 each.  Each ticket holder will have the opportunity to sample up to 16 bottled beers and 12 draft selections.  All beers will be winter seasonals and limited releases.  Experts in the field of craft beer, including master brewers, will be on hand to explain and discuss the various selections.  light appetizers will be available, plus the pool tables will be free from 7-10pm.

The list of beers includes:
Short’s Cup of Joe Coffee stout
Short’s Good Humans Double Brown
Big Sky Powder Hound Winter Warmer
Hebrew Jewbilation Vertical (8-14)
Victory Yakima Glory Imperial Ipa
JK Scrumpy’s Solstice Cider
Troubadour Magma Triple Ipa
Dark Horse 3 Blueberry Stout

Harpoon Winter Warmer
Gouden Carolus Noel Vintage 09
Bell’s Batch 10,000

arcadia london porter

“The majority on this list I’ve never had so I’m super excited to test them out,” said Husband.  “I wanted the list to comprise of seasonal, special release beers that are not already featured at either the WAB or The Emory.  The list was composed by our master brewer Greg Burke, with help from our two favorite beer experts, Daniel Hooper and Scott Donovan.  Any bottles left over from the tasting will be available at The Emory while supplies last.  We ordered many of these beers months in advance because they are no longer available.  The Gouden Carolus was ordered last year and stored specifically for this year’s event.

Tickets can be purchased at the WAB, or pre-ordered over the phone and picked up the evening of the event at 248-546-3696. (January 8th is Elvis’ birthday)
